Geron Associates Limited recently completed a major project to install industrial LED lighting throughout its approximately 35,000 sq. ft. office/manufacturing facility in Markham, Ontario.
The new LED lighting system replace fluorescent lights in the office and incandescent lights in the shop area. All existing light fixtures have been retrofitted with energy-efficient T5 and T8 LED lamps, and several new fixtures have also been added.
“The entire project was completed successfully and on time over the holidays,” says Peter Paul Zammit, Purchasing Manager at Geron, who helped coordinate the project. “We had great support and co-operation from all managers and staff to ensure minimum disruption to workflows and schedules.”
The benefits of LED lighting include exceptionally longer life span, enormously lower energy usage, reduced maintenance costs and higher safety. On average, LED bulbs last 10 times longer than compact fluorescent bulbs, and 133 times longer than typical incandescent bulbs.
Other key benefits of LED lighting include brighter illumination and greater light disbursement. LED lighting contains no mercury or other harmful gasses and emits no harmful UV rays. Several studies have suggested that in addition to providing increased energy efficiency, LED lighting can lead to speeded performance on both visual perceptual and cognitive tasks.
“Geron will achieve a 60 – 70 per cent energy consumption decrease, which will provide ongoing savings on energy and maintenance costs,” Zammit says. “Due to the longer lifespan of LED lights, they don’t have to be replaced as often as fluorescent or incandescent lights, which means purchasing fewer replacement lights, and a reduced environmental footprint.”
In completing the LED retrofit projection before December 31, 2015, Geron was able to take advantage of a provincial government rebate incentive program. “We estimate the payback for installing LED lights to be approximately two years,” Zammit says. “All in all, this was an important investment for Geron that will provide many benefits for years to come.”
